Dangerous Ingredients To Avoid In A Protein Bar

Protein bars are great not only for those who are trying to improve their overall athletic performance and endurance level, or to gain more muscle mass, but for all people who simply do not have the time to enjoy a full meal and who want to enjoy a fast, nourishing, convenient and delicious meal, all at the same time. However, it is extremely important to choose your protein bars very carefully, as they can make or break all your muscle building efforts – some of them are very healthy, while others are simply packed with harmful hydrogenated oils, preservatives, sugars and a plethora of other chemicals, additives, fillers as well as preservatives that will wreak havoc on your health. If you are concerned about these aspects, then here you will find a least of the top 6 most common and unhealthy ingredients in protein bars along with what makes them so dangerous and why you should avoid them at all costs:

1. High Fructose Corn Syrup

High fructose corn syrup, also known as HFCS, is one of the most commonly used sweetening agents in protein bars these days – and this is perfectly understandable, given the fact that HFCS is very cheap to produce and it is widely spread all around the world. However, there are many potentially severe health effects associated with the prolonged and extensive use of high fructose corn syrup, effects that should concern those who eat protein bars on a regular basis. Some people even go so far as to compare HFCS with cigarettes in terms of health effects – this ingredient is commonly found not just in protein bars, but in most sweetened beverages available on the market, in carbonated drinks, canned fruits, baked goods as well as dairy products.

2. Fractionated Palm Kennel Oil

Fractionated oil is very dangerous regardless of its source, and you should steer clear from it. However, fractionated palm kennel oil is a commonly found ingredient in protein bars these days, and the entire process involves heating up the oil then quickly cooling it down until it breaks down into fractions. The resulted oil is then passed through a filtration process that separated the oil, yet that still leaves a very high amount of solid fat behind. The reason why fractionated palm kennel oil present in many protein bars these days is so dangerous is simply because it contains saturated fats in a proportion of up to 80%. Saturated fats are known to thicken the artery walls by increasing the blood levels of LDL cholesterol, which is also known as the “bad cholesterol”. In turn, the LDL cholesterol will increase the risk for cardiovascular disease, and the risk of cardiac arrest or stroke will sky-rocket as well. There are several other alternatives to fractionated palm kennel oil, alternatives that do not contain such amounts of saturated fat and that contain other beneficial elements, such as Vitamin E – palm fruit oil is such an oil, and it is highly recommended to look for protein bars that contain palm fruit oil instead, as this ingredient will boost your metabolic rate and it will help you maintain a healthy immune system at the same time.

3. Sugar Alcohols

Another very popular ingredient found in many protein bars these days is the sugar alcohol, which is also known as polyol and which is a type of carbohydrate that can be at least as dangerous as the other two ingredients described above. The reason why you should steer clear from sugar alcohol found in protein bars is because the human body has a very hard time trying to break down this compound and to digest it in the small bowel, given the fact that it is extremely resistant to the fermentation process that is normally triggered by the oral bacteria. This is why it can not only increase the risk for diarrhea, but it can also worsen an existing irritable bowel syndrome that many people suffer from these days. Besides this, an increased intake of sugar alcohols also leads to other serious effects varying from severe bloating and gas all the way to an intense abdominal pain. Fortunately, there are many alternatives to sugar alcohols as well, and this is why many nutritionists or athletes recommend those who want to increase their muscle mass without making any health-related compromise to try and make their own protein bars at home, quickly and effortlessly.

4. Artificial Sweeteners

The number four most dangerous ingredient found in protein bars these days is the additive and the high number of artificial sweeteners, which can lead to severe insulin imbalances in the body and which, in turn, can lead to blood sugar spikes which will increase the cravings for sweet products. Some research even suggests that these artificial compounds may hinder your body’s natural ability to produce a hormone responsible for controlling the feeling of satiety and the blood sugar levels, a hormone called GLP-1, thus making you feel even hungrier after consuming the protein bar, instead of actually having the opposite effect. On the other hand, the artificial sweeteners not only make you overeat, but they can also increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

5. Whey Protein

We all know that whey protein is good for our bodies, and these days it seems to be particularly popular amongst athletes. In a nutshell, whey protein is derived from a watery substance that is being separated from the curds during the process of making cheese, called whey. While it is true that whey protein supplements can come in handy for your muscle building purposes, there are some serious health concerns that are nowadays being linked to whey protein isolate, as it is believed that this compound can add unnecessary stress to both your kidneys and your liver. In turn, this stress can increase the likelihood of developing calcium deposits and kidney stones, and impair the function of the liver at the same time.

6. Soy Protein

Another ingredient that you should watch out for in protein bars is soy protein, which is basically a source of lean vegetable protein. As whey protein, it is good when used in moderate amounts, but it is also important to know that it can have a devastating side effect on women, given the fact that soy is known to naturally increase the estrogen levels. In turn, this can lead to cancer of the uterus as well as breast cancer.
