History's Weirdest Fitness Contraptions

Some of these are just downright scary.

The Early Treadmill

Who knew? Stationary running first became trendy in the 1920s. We’re really glad the technology has been updated (wooden slats just don’t sound safe) — and we just might steal her super chic jogging outfit.

Old School Leg Lifts

We're not sure how we feel about this 1930s contraption. It actually looks like it could build muscle, but we'd be afraid of getting crushed.

Scary Somersaults

Forget traditional gymnastics! Ladies in the '30s strapped themselves up to this backyard apparatus to practice their backflips.

Stretch Bands

We're all for a good stretch... but not if it means possibly choking yourself. This mid-'30s device looks dangerous — and we bet your chiropractor would agree.

Balancing Act

We’re not entirely sure what's going on here. Apparently skiing without skis was popular in the '50s.

Vibrating Belt

Ah, the iconic vibrating belt. Around for years (the first ones debuted as early as the '30s), it did all the work while you just stood there. And by "all the work" we mean jiggling your body around without raising your heart rate one bit.

Fat Massager

It promised to "melt the fat away," and relax your muscles. We think it looks more like an oversized meat tenderizer.
